International Day of the Girl Child: CCSS Girls Inspired to Dream
By Ayuk Rennet
‘Their visions for the future start now…” These words from Keyaka Edward, Principal of Christian Comprehensive Secondary School (CCSS) in Nkolmbong, Yaoundé, Cameroon, resonated during Sisterspeak237’s visit to the school to celebrate the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child.
In recognition of Sisterspeak237’s initiatives on the CCSS campus, which serves 312 girls, Mr Keyaka expressed his hopes as a father for all the girls to embrace their futures early by nurturing ambitious dreams and pursuing them passionately.
Comfort Mussa, the Coordinator of Sisterspeak237, emphasized that the International Day of the Girl Child serves as a powerful reminder of the unique challenges and opportunities girls face in Cameroon and worldwide. “This day symbolizes our commitment to advocating for girls’ rights and empowerment. It’s a celebration of their potential and an opportunity to raise awareness about the barriers they encounter, particularly in education,” she stated.
Through a dynamic exchange program, Sisterspeak237 facilitated meaningful conversations with the girls about the power of their voices, their unique stories, and their visions for the future. Mussa highlighted the importance of inspiring and empowering them, saying, “We aim to emphasize the strength of their voices and the significance of their visions, motivating them to dream big and carry a strong sense of purpose.”
One particularly impactful reminder from Comfort Mussa, “Girls with dreams become women with vision,” will undoubtedly resonate with the girls as they move forward. Form 5 Science student Sadi Ezra encouraged her peers by stating, “When you focus on your dreams, you will be able to achieve anything.”
As the founder and coordinator of Sisterspeak237 reaffirmed to the press, the organization is committed to continuing its outreach through workshops and mentorship programs designed to build the skills of girls and women in various areas of need.
