Society of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians in Cameroon Reaffirms Commitment to Livingstone Safe Abortion Care Charter in Africa
On January 18, marking the one-year anniversary of the Livingstone Safe Abortion Care Charter in Africa, the Society of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians in Cameroon reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the charter. Experts in Cameroon emphasized that unsafe abortions continue to contribute to 30 percent of maternal mortalities and morbidities in the country.
The Livingstone Safe Abortion Care Charter addresses seven critical priority areas that aim to improve the accessibility and quality of safe abortion care in Africa. Initially proposed and discussed by OB-GYN societies from East, Central, and Southern Africa, the charter has gained significant support and momentum from OB-GYN professionals dedicated to reducing maternal health complications.
The charter’s key priority areas include:
Ensuring comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education and information.
Advancing access to safe, legal, and affordable abortion services.
Promoting the availability and proper use of contraception.
Strengthening healthcare provider training and skills in safe abortion care.
Advocating for the decriminalization of abortion and the removal of punitive laws.
Enhancing the collection and analysis of data on abortion and its impact on maternal health.
Fostering collaboration and partnerships among stakeholders to support safe abortion care.
By reaffirming their commitment to the Livingstone Safe Abortion Care Charter, the Society of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians in Cameroon aims to contribute to the reduction of maternal morbidity and mortality caused by unsafe abortions. Their dedication reflects a collective effort to safeguard the reproductive rights and well-being of women in Cameroon and across Africa.
